TOM HOWARD

The Club announce the sad news that former club member, Tom Howard, has died at the age of 66. Tom was a great club member with relatives and nephews in the rugby world, Johnnie Howard of Northampton Saints/Biarritz and Jack Singleton, son of Tom's sister Joe, the current Worcester 1st XV hooker being two of them; add to that list Charlie Howard and Michael Singleton who have played for HRFC, and you have a strong rugby 'family.'

As a schoolboy at Ampleforth he held several records for sprinting climaxing in his running the 100 yards at the North of England Schoolboy Championships in a recorded time of 10 seconds. a superb feat. After he finished school he attended Hatfield Polytechnic, now known as the University of Hertfordshire, and started to play for HRFC in the early 1970s. He was a fine winger with a low centre of gravity so difficult to defend against.

Years later he was to be found on a regular basis in Billys Bar, Harpenden where he was co-owner and/or the Silver Cup pub; a master raconteur he would keep his audience in raptures with his colourful stories.

Apart from his rugby, Tom had a successful career in the IT industry and amongst his other interests was managing a boating business. He retired to live in Thailand a few years ago where he led an eventful life.
