Harpenden secured their second consecutive bonus point victory with a convincing win over Chingford, despite a shaky start.
The visitors raced into an early 10 point lead following a penalty kick and a penalty try which saw captain Oli Lacey go to the sin bin. After this less than ideal start Harps began to feel their way into the game with two tries of their own scored by the prolific Jevaughn Warren and full back Tom Sweeney.
Chingford were proving to be effective at repelling the waves of attack play and were rewarded with an interception which put them back into the lead. However, the home side were in no mood to be caught up in a tight contest and began to hit their groove and tries from Wilkinson and Tait made the half time score 24-17.
As the weather worsened Harpenden were able to capitalise on the favourable wind, keeping Chingford pinned back into their own half with some smart and varied kicking. A penalty from Sweeney extended the lead beyond two scores and following a Chingford yellow card Harpenden were able to make the most of the one man advantage. First with McSporran scoring from the back of a driving maul, then Wilkinson crashing over from the first phase from another set piece.
By now there was snow swirling around in the gale force wind. Another try was added by Ollie Mann and after soaking up some pressure from the Essex side on their own line the Harpenden were once again rewarded for their set piece dominance with a push over try that Ed Preston dotted down at the back of the scrum.
A sterner challenge awaits next week as Harpenden travel to fourth place Eton Manor.
